Investigation:
After reading the many accounts of the alleged haunting
of the Loomis House on line we decided to conduct an investigation, so we could attempt to either prove or disprove these
stories. When we arrived at the location, we were met by Charlotte, one of the owners of the Loomis House. She took us on
a tour of the first and second floors of the location and told us of some of the experiences that visitors have had there.
She then directed us to the stair case leading to the third and fourth floors. She said that she didn’t want to tell
us too much about what had been reported to have happened on those floors. That way our experience wouldn’t be influenced
by anything she might have told us.
We walked up the stairs and proceeded to walk around
the top two floors, just to get a feel for the layout of the place. This was to be a very short investigation, so the little
equipment that was brought along was then unloaded and set up. Our base of operations was positioned outside of room 20 on
the fourth floor. Our digital audio recorder and external mic were placed in room 20, along with the Trifield Natural EM meter,
which was positioned on the radiator. This was done so that if we weren’t around and the meter went off, it would be
picked up on the audio recording. We decided to only use two video cameras, because of our limited time allotted for this
investigation. One camera was set to cover about one half of the fourth floor including one of the stair cases. The other
camera was set on the railing of the fourth floor, pointing down covering an area of interest on the third floor. During our
initial walkthrough of the third floor, Jim stated that he thought he had seen something, but he thought that it was just
his eyes playing tricks on him. He never said what he thought he saw, or where he saw it. This way if another investigator
was to have an experience, his story wouldn’t influence them. During the setup of the equipment, Trevor was on the third
floor plugging in an extension cord. As he stood up, he thought that he saw a person quickly walk into a bathroom by the staircase.
There was no sound accompanying this and the only people in the building were Trevor, Holly, Jim, and Charlotte, who was on
the first floor. When Trevor asked Jim if he thought he saw someone walking on the third floor he confirmed this. When asked
where he thought he saw this movement, he stated that it looked like someone quickly walking into the bathroom.
After the equipment was positioned and recording was
started, we conducted another walkthrough of the location to obtain baseline readings with the emf detector and the thermometer.
During the entire investigation the Natural EM meter went off numerous times. We aren’t sure if this was due to the
amount of activity in the building or if maybe there was a natural explanation, such as the geomagnetic field being disrupted.
After the baseline readings were obtained, we decided to conduct a ghost watch on the fourth floor of the building. Since
we were going to focus our attention on the fourth floor, we decided to setup a passive IR motion detector on the third floor
to hopefully notify us of any activity on that floor. Trevor was in a room down the hallway on the fourth floor placing a
digital voice recorder set on voice activation, while Jim and Holly went to sit in room 20. As they were about to sit down
the motion detector on the third floor was set off. Everyone rushed down to see what set it off, but no reason for the alarm
being tripped was found. The detector was reset and everyone went back up to the fourth floor to see if maybe they had somehow
set the alarm off on accident. Trevor was in the doorway of room 20 and Holly and Jim stood where the were when the alarm
went off. As they went to sit down again the motion detector was set off again. Trevor was standing in the door way and could
see over the railing on to the third floor. Nothing that could have set off the alarm was observed. Holly and Jim went down
to the third floor and reset the detector, while Trevor stayed on the fourth floor. After the alarm was reset he walked around
the railing on the fourth floor in an attempt to set the alarm off. He was unable to do this. It was decided to reset the
alarm and stay on the third floor in the hallway out of the way of the motion detector. While on the third floor the motion
detector did not go off, but strange activity was recorded on the audio on the fourth floor. On the audio you can hear Trevor
ask, “If someone set the alarm off, can you set it off again?” Seconds after this is asked the Natural EM meter
went off. About a minute later he is heard asking, “If somebody is here, can you please do anything.” The EM meter
goes off immediately after the question is asked. After sitting for awhile on the third floor with nothing happening, it was
decided to reset the motion detector and go back to the fourth floor. As soon as the three investigators entered room 20 the
motion detector went off again. Again, no reason for the detector going off was found. At this point it was thought that maybe
the motion detector could be malfunctioning, so it was switched out with another passive IR motion detector. Holly went down
to the first floor to speak with Charlotte and Jim and Trevor went back to the fourth floor. As soon as Jim and Trevor walked
into room 20 the newly setup motion detector went off. Again, no reason for the alarm going off was found. We were then informed
that it was time to go, but we were welcome to come back for a more in-depth investigation.
The Loomis House is one of the most interesting locations
that we have had the privilege to investigate. Although our investigation was extremely short, we had numerous experiences
that we could not explain. After reviewing the video and pictures taken at the location, nothing anomalous was found. There
were three possible Class C evps on the audio, along with the strange activity of the EM meter. When our experience at the
Loomis House was told to Troy Taylor and John Winterbauer, both said that they were not surprised by the amount of activity
we may have encountered there. We are in the process of setting up another visit to the Loomis House. This is an ongoing investigation.
